Student Profile Comfort

The non-linear path of undergrad.

Untraditional Pathways to Med School

For Comfort, Medical School has always been the long-term goal, however her journey there has been 鈥渘on-linear,鈥 as she puts it. Studying programs in the Life Sciences, Comfort is exploring other aspects of the medical field, like research and nursing, on her way to her long-term goal of becoming a Physician.

Life Outside the Classroom

When she鈥檚 not studying, Comfort has been building other skills like leadership, and expanding her network. One experience she鈥檚 enjoyed has been campus tour guiding, a role that she says has improved her communication skills and given her the unique opportunity to speak to people from all over the world. She also has enjoyed serving as the Outreach Coordinator for Black Doctors of Tomorrow (BDOT), a club that has highlighted pathways for aspiring Black physicians and medical leaders, and connected her to people in the field she ultimately wants to work in, such as students in 草榴2024新地扯一二鈥檚 Temerty Faculty of Medicine. When she just wants to clear her mind, Comfort enjoys swimming recreationally, at both Hart House and the Athletic Centre鈥檚 pools.

Comfort鈥檚 Advice to Incoming Students

Comfort鈥檚 number one tip for incoming university students? 鈥淏e open to gaining new knowledge and perspectives.鈥 University is a time of meeting new people and trying new things as you begin to forge your path into adulthood. Comfort says what helped her in this process was not being afraid to accept that there were things she didn鈥檛 know, and staying open to trying and learning new things. One example of this were the 鈥淚ntro to Sociology鈥 classes she took, initially just because they fit well into her schedule, but which ultimately ended up becoming some of her favourite classes. These courses provided a change of pace, as they were Humanities-focused as opposed to her other Life Science-related classes, and she found they were impactful beyond just academics, as they helped her transition socially into the Canadian system. One topic she learned about in these courses was Cognitive Dissonance, which she ended up writing a research paper about, and continues to be a research topic she鈥檚 exploring today in her neuroscience studies.
