Pursuing research
Jim participated in a summer research project exploring the relationship between the change in one鈥檚 blood pressure and the change in electrical resistance across two points in the body, with hopes of developing a new, more efficient way to measure blood pressure.
He got this opportunity when he approached a professor after a lecture to ask if there were any research openings, emphasizing the importance of being proactive and reaching out. The experience was funded by the first year summer research fellowship, which offers a $7,000 grant to 15 selected students and Jim ultimately got to present his work at UofT鈥檚 Undergraduate Research Conference.
Outside-of-the-classroom learning
Jim was very involved on campus in first year, as the Track One Class Representative and a member of the Lady Godiva Memorial Band. The former taught him event management skills, as he planned the end of year dance for his Engineering cohort, and the latter, a bit more silly, provided a chance to destress, as the band aims to crash campus events with comically bad music.
Destressing as a university student
In his free time, Jim likes to play music (the violin, clarinet and saxophone) and read dystopian books.

Flex the skill of trying - experience in trying is experience itself. Don鈥檛 cut yourself off from potential opportunities or connections, even if it鈥檚 a bit outside your comfort zone.
