Student Profile Michael

Seeking success from the start

Building a foundation

In his first year, taking courses like 鈥淪TAA57: Introduction to Data Science鈥 helped Michael understand what a career in the data industry would look like. It taught him how to code in R and gave him an overview of other programming languages like Python, SQL and more. The following year, he served as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for MATA34: Calculus for Management, an experience that helped him master the knowledge he鈥檇 gained in his first year. Reflecting on this experience, he finds joy in knowing he was able to teach and support students who were in the position he was only a year prior. It also taught him important work skills, such as organization and communication.

Building a resume

Prior to having significant work or co-op experience, Michael began gaining experience in the area he wanted to go into鈥攆inance and data analysis鈥攖hrough clubs. Starting as the Events Manager, and currently the Head of Finance for the Indonesia Students鈥 Association at UTSC, he鈥檚 been able to develop his financial planning skills, while finding a community of students from a similar background on campus. He also serves as the Finance Associate for the Association of Mathematical and Computer Science Students (AMACCS) at UTSC, which similarly helps him strengthen his skills, network and meet new people. Most recently, through UTSC鈥檚 co-op program, he鈥檚 just landed a work placement as a Programming and Data Analyst Intern at the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA). He feels his club experiences helped him build his way to this accomplishment, and he is happy the position aligns with his technical background in data and financial management. UTSC鈥檚 Co-op office was also an important support throughout the application process, as that team helped him with resume and cover letter writing, interview prep, and more.

Building a community

As an international student, Michael knew he鈥檇 have to take advantage of all the clubs and organizations on campus to build a community. Once he got to campus, he reached out to the Indonesian clubs on campus, and found some of his closest friends through this. He also made an effort to attend orientation events and socialize during his first year, which led to building the friendships he has now.
