Student Profile Emma

From Jane Austen's literary namesake to English student

The Draw to Toronto

Originally from Ireland, Emma chose to come to 草榴2024新地扯一二 because of the opportunities a big city provides, such as cultural exploration and work experiences. She says being in Toronto has allowed her proximity and networking opportunities for the industry she eventually wants to pursue - publishing. One cool opportunity she was afforded was serving as an assistant to Toronto - and 草榴2024新地扯一二鈥檚 - very own Margaret Atwood, during a speaking engagement she had. No greater honor for an English student.

Unique courses

Named after the iconic Jane Austen book, it was only fitting that Emma decided to study English when she got to university. One thing she鈥檚 loved about the program is the wide array of courses offered that have allowed her to explore a diversity of topics in literature. One of her favorite courses has been 鈥淓NG378 (Special Topics): Why Do We Love Horror?鈥, a class that converted her to a horror fan after learning about the history, different forms, and psychological science behind people鈥檚 fascinations on the subject. She recommends 鈥淗ead Full of Ghosts鈥 by Paul G Temblay, for those looking to get into the genre!

What鈥檚 next?

Having studied English and served as the President of the English Students Union, it should be no surprise that Emma鈥檚 career ambitions lean in the literary world. While she鈥檚 considered some options such as law school and studying Library Sciences, she ultimately wants to work in publishing, and potentially on some editorial content.
